Citizenship Clinic

(Coming February 2026)

The BYU Citizenship Clinic, hosted at the BYU English Language Center in partnership with the BYU Office of Belonging and Linguistics Department, supports immigrants preparing for the United States Naturalization Civics Test by providing free education in U.S. civics (history, government, geography, etc.) and related English language.

Naturalization Ceremony participants

You are eligible to take this free 10-week course if you meet the following requirements—however, those who meet the requirements must still apply and be accepted to participate in the course:

  • Your English Proficiency is Intermediate-Low or higher. Click here to read about proficiency levels; and
  • You are eligible to apply for citizenship. (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services provides a Naturalization Eligibility Tool to evaluate your eligibility for citizenship.) In many cases, you may be eligible for citizenship if:
    • You have been granted permanent resident status under U.S. immigration laws, and have a Permanent Resident Card (also known as a “Green Card”);
    • You have been a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. for at least 5 years (or at least 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen) and can show “good moral character” during that time period; and
    • You have physically lived in the U.S. for at least half of the time that you have had permanent resident status.

Please note that the Citizenship Clinic only provides educational services in U.S. Civics and English. BYU and its students do not provide legal advice or determine citizenship eligibility, and participation in the Citizenship Clinic does not guarantee citizenship.

Individuals seeking legal services, including help preparing the Application for Naturalization (Form N-400) may be eligible for assistance from the BYU Community Legal Clinic, a separate clinic sponsored by the BYU Law School. You can learn more about the Community Legal Clinic, including contact information, at this link. However, please be aware that if you are NOT a lawful permanent resident, neither the Community Legal Clinic nor the Citizenship Clinic can help you with the naturalization process.

The 10 weekly classes will begin on February 5, 2026 and will end on April 9, 2026. The classes will be held in person on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 PM(MST) at the BYU University Parkway Center (UPC) (at the corner of University Avenue and University Parkway). The closest bus stops on Route 831 (Provo Grandview) are here (WB) and here (SB); the closest bus stop on Route 830X (Utah Valley Express/UVX) is here. Street address information is below:
