Mission Statement

As a vital part of the Department of Linguistics, the English Language Center trains language teachers, offers high quality English language instruction, facilitates research, and contributes to individual and societal wellbeing through partnerships with on-campus entities and the global community.

Aims

Experiential Learning through Teaching


We prepare BYU students to be Christlike English teachers by providing them with experiential learning in practical contexts to develop excellence in English language teaching, curriculum design, materials development, technology use, assessment, evaluation, teacher training, and research.

High Quality English Language Instruction


We provide ELC students with the highest quality teaching of foundational and academic English with a research-based curriculum opening educational, economic, and spiritual opportunities.

Innovative Research


We conduct and facilitate cutting-edge research and share our scholarship by presenting our work at professional conferences and publishing our research in the highest-caliber research journals.

Community Engagement and Collaboration


We actively collaborate to share our time and expertise with communities, missions, other CES entities, and the ELL community at large.
