Application Documents

Submitting the ELC Application Form

Before submitting documents, please create a Net Id and submit the ELC application form.
Applicants must create a BYU netID to complete the ELC online application. A Net ID is a user name that you will use to access web resources. Please create a Net ID before proceeding. After obtaining your Net ID, please return to this page.

Create a Net ID

Important Note: A Social Security Number is not required to create a Net ID. If you do not have one, you may leave that field on the form blank.

If for whatever reason you are unable to create a Net ID, please email us for assistance.

Instructions to create the BYU netID and to apply to the ELC are listed at our website at: https://elc.byu.edu/apply-today

Once you have your BYU netID, you need to return to our web site https://elc.byu.edu/apply, enter using your netid and password, and proceed by clicking on APPLICATION. This will take you to the online ELC application form which you need to complete and submit.

If you are currently in the US on a student visa or are a PR or a US citizen (or in the US on any other visa classification), please contact our office regarding the admissions requirements.

Required Documents

Please submit the following additional documents via email to elcsec@byu.edu.

1.  Application fee – The application fee of $50 needs to be paid after the online application has been submitted.  The payment link is: elc.byu.edu/elcappfee and the URL is: http://commerce.cashnet.com/webelca. Payments can be made with a credit/debit card or wired to the ELC. Use the same netID and password that you used with your ELC online application to log in to make the payment.

2.  OFFICIAL Bank Statement We must receive an official bank statement.  If you are applying to attend one semester, the bank statement must show at least $6,000 USD in the ending/current balance. If you are applying to attend two semesters, the ending/current balance must be at least $12,000 USD. If you have dependents who will accompany the student to the US, an additional $700 USD per dependent per semester must also be proven.

The bank statement must have a bank stamp, seal, or signature and list the name of the account holder and the bank name and address. The bank statement must be dated within the last 90 days. If you do not have the required amount of funds in your own bank account, then a sponsor may provide proof of funding on a bank statement.

We can also accept an official letter from a financial institution which states the name of the client, and that the client has at least $6,000 USD (support for one semester) or $12,000 USD (support for two semesters) in an account with the financial institution. The letter would need to be on letterhead and have an official stamp, seal, and/or signature.

The student will need the original official bank statement to apply for a student visa. We can accept copies of the official bank statement by email.

3.  Statement of Support by Sponsor form – (This form is only required if you have a sponsor.) If a sponsor is submitting a bank statement, then the sponsor must print and complete a 2023-2024 Statement of Support by Sponsor Form. The sponsor must check the appropriate box next to the semester for which he/she will provide funding and write in $6,000 USD on the line if he or she is agreeing to support you financially for one semester or $12,000 USD for two semesters. If the student has dependents who will accompany the student to the US, an additional $700 USD per dependent per semester must also be proven. The sponsor must then sign the Statement of Support by Sponsor form and send the form to us along with the bank statement by email: elcsec@byu.edu.

4.  Ecclesiastical Endorsement – Every applicant must have an Ecclesiastical (religious) Endorsement which requires two separate interviews. Since the endorsement requires two interviews, you will need to begin the process approximately two weeks before the application deadline to have time for both interviews to be completed and submitted into the BYU system by the deadline date.

The Endorsement process is completed online at www.endorse.byu.edu. Use the same netID and password that you used with your ELC online application to log in.

If you are a member of the LDS Church, you need to be interviewed by your bishop and stake president through the BYU endorsement system which is completed online at www.endorse.byu.edu.

If you are a not an LDS Church member, you can choose to have your first interview with either your own church leader or with a LDS bishop in your area. Your second interview will need to be conducted by the BYU Chaplain who will contact you once the first interview has been received by BYU. The process is completed online at www.endorse.byu.edu. Please contact our office if you need additional information.

5. Photocopy of your passport – We need to receive the passport page listing your photo and personal information (not the front cover of the passport). The passport must be unexpired and machine readable. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States. You can send this to us by email. If you have dependents, we also need a copy of the information page in their passports.

6.  High school and/or college transcripts, grades, certificates, diplomas, etc. - Applicants must have graduated from high school (or the equivalent of 12th grade in the US) by the application deadline to be eligible to be considered for admission. We need to receive transcripts showing 3 years of high school grades and a high school diploma. If the applicant has attended college, the applicant can send three years of college transcripts. The transcripts need to list the classes taken and the grades received. If the transcripts are not in English, we also need to receive an INFORMAL English translation. Anyone who speaks your language and English can do the translation. You can send these documents by electronic email to elcsec@byu.edu.

Note: While certified translations of transcripts are not required for admission to the English Language Center, they are required when applying to other universities (BYU, BYU-I, BYU-H, Ensign, etc.). If you plan on applying to a university while studying at the ELC, begin collecting your application materials before you leave your country. Often times transcript certification is required for admission to universities in the US and it may be easier to get that information prior to leaving the country.

7.  Payment:  $2700 Tuition - After the student has been accepted, the student will be emailed an acceptance letter and the payment link to their BYU My Financial Center Account.  The student needs to pay $2700 within 2 weeks of receiving the acceptance notification.  If a student cannot be accepted or does not receive a visa, the tuition payment will be refunded to the payer as long as we are notified at least 30 days before the beginning of the semester.

I-20 Form and Admissions Packet: After the payment has been received, the I-20 Form, and additional information will be emailed to the student.  Embassies and US Immigration Officials will accept a printed copy of the I-20 Form.

When we receive the above paperwork, we will process your application and notify you via email when your application is complete.
