The Aims of a BYU Education
If you are admitted to BYU, enrolling there gives you the chance to be admitted to heaven with their aims of education. The purpose of BYU education is preparing independent and faithful individuals in our society. Everyone at the school who conducts outside activities and teaches in the classroom are both responsible for fulfilling these educational aims.BYU educational aim is divided into four main outcomes: spiritually strengthening, intellectually enlarging, character building, and leading to lifelong learning and service.
The basic goal of Spiritually strengthening is to teach students every subject with the Spirit. It does not mean every teacher would teach religion in their lessons, however every teacher would maintain the gospel in his/her subjects. The students, teachers and staff of this community are united by faith in God, they see themselves as brothers and sisters who want to learn together, even through study and faith. The most vital part of this aim is to be good enough in the academic disciplines while still being good as possible at the higher demands of obedience to the Savior. Basically, a spiritually strengthened education means building their own faith through their hard work and encouragement. According to the first aim, ELC teachers put enough effort to teach their classes with spirit and everyone in the ELC sees the positive consequences as I know.
The second aim of a BYU education is intellectually enlarging, which means students should develop their skills, breadth, and depth to enlarge their intellects. Intellectual dimension of BYU education is the consequence of an ambitious commitment to the pursuit of truth.Students of the BYU community study the combination of academic subjects and gospel precisely. It is not only important how students are taught, but also what they are taught is shaped by an eternal perspective. Students improve their skills, breadth, and depth to make their intellects greater while they study in BYU. Teachers in the ELC, they always focus on what to teach us, they always try to enlarge our knowledge in every aspect.
Brigham Young University always cares as much about students’ character as about great independence. Therefore, a BYU education should brace such moral aspects such as honesty, respect, modesty, self-control, courage, compassion and hard work. In other words, BYU has been teaching students how they apply gospel in their lives in the long-term. President David O. McKay said that “Character is the highest purpose of education: above knowledge is wisdom, and above wisdom is character,”explaining that people need to become a true person first, loving and caring, after that it is his responsibility to become a mathematician. An education of BYU aims in every part of the BYU experience should strengthen character including being honest, treats all other people with dignity and fairness, careful and honest use of university funds and serving others. For example our characters and behavior are evaluated by learning experience points in the ELC; which is meant to build our character.
Brigham Young once said: “Our education should be such as to improve our minds and fit us for increased usefulness; to make us of greater service to the human family” which helps us to understand the last aim of BYU education. BYU should inspire students to continue learning and serve others as much as they can. A BYU degree should guide them how to learn, stay curious and how to love others. BYU graduates should have a desire to use their knowledge and education not only for their lives, but in their family and society. The last aim of BYU education is about basically staying curious about education and God, also using this knowledge to help others.
In conclusion, the core aim of BYU education is to prepare students not only to be successful in their career, but in their family, therefore in their society throughout their lives. ELC applies those aims into their mission and daily basis such as teachers teaching their subject with a spirit, they are always willing to help us academically and personally, also they try to build our character by learning experience grades. Based on the BYU education aim,it seems like ELC and BYU students received an acceptance to Heaven by following what and how they are taught.
