We are proud to announce that our in-house assessments can now be used as an alternative to other English Language proficiency tests for admittance to BYU in Provo and Ensign College.

What are the Language Acquisition Tests (LATs)?

The LATs are comprised of tests in Writing, Reading, Listening, and Speaking. Upon entry into the Intensive English program, students take the LATs to be placed in the correct level of instruction. At the end of the semester, students take the LATs again to help measure proficiency gains. If you'd like more information on the LATs. You can click here to learn more.

How does this work?

This is a PILOT or experiment. We are doing this to see how we can better streamline the student experience from the first semester at the ELC to the first year in university study. In order to use LAT test scores, you must agree to participate in this research study. You will stay in contact with the ELC for 1 year after starting at BYU or Ensign College. The ELC will contact your professors and TAs, too. This means that you may have to sign a FERPA release form indicating that ELC researchers can talk about your progress with your instructors. Scores from single test event will be used. We are unable to provide a "best of" score report. Please also remember that the LATs schedule stays the same. It is only offered at the beginning and end of each semester.

What does this mean for my application to BYU or Ensign College?

The dates for applications at BYU and Ensign College are unchanged. You must apply by the deadline. Please look at the deadlines and determine when you need to have the LAT scores.

What scores do I need to meet the English Proficiency Requirements?
