Envisioning BYU: An ELC Perspective

The three aims of success as BYU students

Why BYU students can be so successful? The mission of Brigham Young University is to prepare students “to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life.” (Brigham Young University March 1, 1995.) BYU purpose for students is to help them to prepare to reach success The three pillars that can help a BYU student to succeed are to seek students of faith, intellect, and character.

The first aim that students should develop is to be Spiritually Strengthened. “The founding charge of BYU is to teach every subject with the Spirit.” (Brigham Young University March 1, 1995.) The spirit is the source of understanding and guidance throughout your path. He can teach you and help you to build confidence in yourself. At many times BYU students being around lots of people can affect your spirituality and testimony but if students never forget the importance of having the spirit they can keep building the desire to seek learning a spiritually strengthening education, which can help students to strengthen their testimonies of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ their faith will increase and they wont feel alone during this what feels like an incredibly difficult journey.

The second aim is to be intellectually enlarging. BYU’s students should be “capable of competing with the best students in their field.” (Brigham Young University March 1, 1995.) As sons and daughters of Heavenly Father. He has given us the ability to be prepared and be perfect as He is. “The glory of God is intelligence” (Doctrine and Covenants 90:15) and we can have the ability to study academically in the light of divine truth.

The third aim is Character Building (President David O. McKay taught that “character is the highest aim of education.”) building character requires that students can develop moral values such as virtue, integrity, self-control, compassion etc. For example, having Integrity or character while participating in a test helps you to better develop this aim. This can make students be more like the Savior Jesus Christ developing moral virtues. In addition, students that develop character can be strengthened by Christlike attributes. Academic studies can become easier because the Holy Ghost can be part of your professional journey.

While studying at BYU I have learned to always be prayerful along with following and obeying the three aims of this institution. It is important to have a reason to hope to obtain those qualities. Without hope and having a centered heart focusing on the blessings God gives you. In order for the help of the Almighty you have to trust that He will answer your prayers of guidance and wisdom. (The scripture from the Book of Mormon “If ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.”) With these two principles faith and hope founded on the Savior, it can sustain students and prayers will be answered.

In conclusion, how BYU can help ELC students to practice the three Aims of BYU is by living spirituality, intellectually and building character. This helps all students of ELC to prepare for the vastly everyday problems that will come in their way. The three Aims better inspires students to continue learning through education/religion and provide service for others throughout life. Without these Aims a student can lack the needed progression in order to obtain the necessary growth/integrity to obtain or think Celestially in the life to come.
