College of Humanities

We are grateful for the support of Department of Linguistics and the College of Humanities. They provide very critical support for the English Language Center.

BYU’s English Language Center (ELC) is a unique and well-respected laboratory school within the College of Humanities that offers students a practicum in how to teach English language to non-native speakers while simultaneously giving international students a meaningful and effective way to improve their language skills. It also serves as a launch pad for graduate students to leverage their degree into careers in the industry. ELC students themselves find ample opportunities to experience state-of-the art language instruction, often in preparation for continuing on to higher education in an English-language environment. Although ELC students are not formally matriculated into BYU, they are nonetheless considered students of the humanities by virtue of their intensive study of language within an environment that fosters both intellectual achievement and spiritual growth.
